Jaman South MP: Revoke license of small scale miners

MP for Jaman South Constituency, Hon. Yaw Afful has called for licenses of small scale miners to be revoked with immediate effect.

He said if the government wishes to really stop the influx of galamsey activities within the country, the above directive should be adhered to.

According to the legislator, Chinese miners usually use the small scale mining as a camouflage to commit heinous activities in mining centres including destruction of water bodies, farms and other properties and go scot free without being caught up by law.

“Some of these Chines miners because the law does not permit them to operate alone, join forces with indigenes to commit atrocities which endanger the lives of residents in the catchment areas in which they operate,” he affirmed.

Hon. Afful who made the call on Adom Fm’s Morning show programme dubbed ‘Dwaso Nsem’ today suggested that after revoking licenses of small scale miners, their concessions should also be seized by government.

The MP however commended the Government’s inter-ministerial task force against galamsey, for their role in helping to clamp down illegal mining activities within the country.

Hon. Yaw Afful some few weeks ago revealed his intentions of stopping any illegal mining activity within his constituency.

I will not push through poorly crafted govt programmes – Majority leader

Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. Benjamin Kunbuor has made it clear he will not push through any government business which falls short of proper due diligence.

The Majority Leader said with his training, in critical reviewing of bills and statutes, it would be embarrassing to identify mistakes in government programmes laid before parliament for consideration.

“It is the quality of the bill that I am worried about,” he lamented.

A poorly crafted bill would face unnecessary criticisms, long delays and an embarrassment to government and put pressure on him as a majority leader, he revealed.

But a “meticulous” Kunbuor asserted he would not sacrifice quality for speed.

“There is no amount of pressure that will make me do the wrong thing in parliament. Even if that bill has to wait for another sitting, it has to”, he said.

Dr. Kunbuor who is leader of government business in the House added that by virtue of his non-cabinet position he could not be privy to confidential workings of the executive structure.

He said this hampered his “capacity to do specific follow-up to the various MMDAs” to ensure government business was properly done.

“I cannot use the parliamentary secretariat to run government business in parliament, you can run into a lot of clashes with confidentiality”, he noted.

Minority MPs are unhappy about the situation. They fear the House may not be able to complete its work before it rises next month.

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the minority leader in parliament noted the House would be going on recess next month for renovation works to “re-configure” the chamber of parliament.

Any delays would unnecessarily increase their work load when they reconvened.

Parliament on Tuesday sat for only ten minutes because items on the order paper required further scrutiny. That is not an isolated case. For the best part of the last three weeks since the House reconvened, sittings have failed to go the full hall.

Minority accused of consistent absenteeism in Parliament

Deputy Majority Leader Rashid Pelpuo has said the Minority in Parliament should be blamed, in part, for the recent absenteeism of members in the House.

Many of the Members of Parliament (MPs) have – over the last few days – failed to turn up for sitting, prompting the House to adjourn early.

The MPs were recalled to consider among others, the controversial CI to create 45 new constituencies.

Mr Pelpuo told Joy News though the absenteeism cuts across both sides, members on the Minority are the chief culprits.

“…The Minority consistently are depleting in their numbers because they are more absent than the others…” he said.

Mr Pelpuo was however hopeful that with time most of the MPs will “come to Parliament.”

“Indeed it is worrying and we [MPs] need to reflect our determination to serve our nation and serve our people and do self-sacrifice.”

MP for THLD donates roofing sheets to two schools

Two schools in the Twifo Hermang Lower Denkyira Constiuency in the central region have received donations of 10 packets of roofing sheets and packets of nails from the Member of Parliament for the
area, Foster Joseph Andoh.

The two schools, Jukwa Catholic Primary and Armah Kwamano DA Primary both have their roofing ripped off by heavy rainstorms with Armah Kwamano having some damages to the school structure.

The items worth over forty-five thousand Ghana cedis will be used to put the structure of the two schools back in shape to enable the students get back to school to continue their studies.

The MP is aggrieved that over twenty schools have already been reported to have suffered similar ordeals, and the cost in repairing these structures will be very huge.

He raised concerns about the quality of work by contractors, adding that most of the affected schools were constructed less than five years ago. He thus called for technical officers at the various assemblies to do better quality check of projects to ensure contractors do not short change the government. Another solution to the problem is for school heads or the assemblies to plant trees around school buildings to protect them from storms.

NHIS office for Dormaa East soon-MP

The Member of Parliament for Dormaa East, William Kwasi Sabi has successfully secured the construction of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) office for his constituency.

The project to be financed by the National Health Insurance Authority is currently at the advanced stage with site plan and other paper work completed. According to him, he has received assurance that the project will commence somewhere in August.

Dormaa East at present is without its own health insurance office and residents have to travel to other areas outside the constituency to register for the service. This was due to the fact that until the creation of the Dormaa East District, which was cut from Dormaa Municipal they had one NHIS administrative office. Unfortunately, the creation of the new district has rendered it without one.

Mr. Sabi said the effort is aimed at bringing NHIS services to the door steps of residents to give room to more people to register for the scheme. He thus called on residents to exercise restraints while things are put in place to offer them quality services.
