Tatale hospital grapples with several challenges-MP

Hon. James Cecil Yanwube, Member of Parliament for Tatale/Sanguli is calling for urgent intervention from government through the Ministry of Health (MOH) to solve the overwhelming challenges of the Tatale hospital.

The facility is reportedly facing some problems which has accounted for setbacks in its operations, thus affecting the delivery of quality healthcare service in the district.

A document available on the desk of ghanamps.gov.gh and brought forward by the MP has captured some pockets of problems which relatively formed the core issues that retard growth and development of the facility.

CHALLENGES

• Inadequate specialty staff such as midwives, community health nurses and staff registered nurses.

• Poor transport system-There is the need for at least one vehicle for the health administrative staff and most of the motorbikes allocated to health posts in the district are now in a state of disrepair.

• Inadequate fridges to keep vaccines for immunizations.

• Inadequate accommodation for staff and the few available also needs urgent renovation.

The hospital is also in dire need of Doctors who would attend to the health challenges of people of the area, the MP stated.

Meanwhile he said delay in the renovation of the District Health Administration block by the District Assembly is to some extent posing difficulties in ensuring properly co-ordinated and well planned health services or programmes.

He thereby urged the assembly to double up works on the project, since the office is the nerve centre for health policy implementation in the district.

National Security is only interested in monitoring opposition elements – Bosomtwe MP

Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Simon Osei Mensah has accused the National Security apparatus of being obsessed with monitoring activities of opposition members rather than ensuring a safe Ghana.

According to him, this behavior has resulted in a situation where there is laxity in security at somecvery sensitive places which threatens the security of Ghana.

The MP was speaking on Oman FM on Tuesday about the arrest of the Kotoka International Airport security chief in the U.S and another Ghanaian for trafficking drugs into the USA.
The news of the arrest has generated a lot of public outcry with some concluding that this shows how porous security is.

Hon. Osei Mensah further stated that he is at pains to understand why National Security is taking credits for the arrest of the two persons.

” National Security operatives allowed these people to pass sail through with this haul of illicit drugs and now they turn round and tell Ghanaians that they collaborated with the US Drug Enforcement Agency in this arrest and so must be commended, we are not kids” he said.

Hon. Osei Mensah urged the National Security and Nacortic Control Agency to step up their game and ensure that the war against drugs is won.

Parliament to summon NACOB boss over drug trafficking

The Parliament’s Select Committee on Defence and Interior says it will summon officials of the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) to answer questions on security related issues at the Kotoka International Airport.

The intended meeting comes on the heels of recent reports about some Ghanaian drug barons busted in the USA, who used the airport as a conduit.

Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Defence and Interior, George Arthur told Joy News in the wake of the drug brouhaha, the Committee was yet to hear from the NACOB.

He disclosed that those in charge of NACOD would be invited to give account of the drug situation in the country and at the airport in particular.

“We have not received any report from them as to what they have done about the issue (recent arrest), whether they have made some revelations or they have made some moves about it. So we need to invite the board and listen to them first.”

Mr Arthur said the Committee had planned to meet the Minister of Interior last week but the minister could not make it due to a cabinet meeting.

He told Joy News barring unforeseen circumstances the Committee will meet the minister tomorrow, Tuesday, and later schedule a meeting with the Inspector General of Police and other security agencies.

He said the committee will also support any bipartisan investigations into the drug menace in the country.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Information, Murtala Mohammed has assured that government will not renege on its responsibility to make the drug business unprofitable to persons who want to indulge in it.

He strongly disagreed that the airport security has been compromised, emphasizing that all arrests affected had “tremendous” collaboration from the security in Ghana.

Nevertheless, he conceded that as a human institution there could be some lapses at the airport.

He insisted that the country’s security agencies should be commended for their unwavering fight against the drug menace, and should be empowered to do more.

For him, it will be too “simplistic” for anyone to suggest a bipartisan investigation into the recent drug-related arrests; he would rather prefer a “holistic” investigation.

He also ridiculed claims by the opposition NPP that a Ghanaian drug baron arrested in May, Solomon Adelaquaye was a financier of the ruling NDC.

“That statement cannot stand the test of time,” he said, questioning why the NDC would want to give out a financier of the party.

Tatale/Sanguli MP request for first/second cycle schools

The Member of Parliament for Tatale /Sanguli, Hon. James Cecil Yanwube has observed that most children in his constituency are deprived of education due to some limiting factors.

“A visit to the constituency in late March and May revealed that about two thousand children in some communities are completely deprived of opportunity of going to school due to factors such as lack of motorable roads, absence of schools or lack of teachers.

In a recent paper laid before parliament, the MP cited that this unfortunate situation has thus culminated into child trafficking issues in various communities of the district.

He therefore called for concerted efforts by all relevant stakeholders to stop the trend of this infamous activity in the area.

According to him, the absence of first and second cycle schools in most communities under the district has also contributed in regularizing child trafficking in the district.

He therefore called on government to come to the aid of the district and assist in the establishment of schools in the deprived communities so it could help salvage the unfortunate situation at hand.

Cabinet submits anti-terrorism act to parliament for consideration

Cabinet has submitted an anti-terrorism Act to parliament for approval. The Act is expected to ensure government is able to punish or freeze the assets of individuals or groups engaged in terror related acts without proper reference to the UN Security Council law.

Deputy Minister of Information, Felix Owusu-Kwakye, told Joy News the amendment Act will help with the proper definition of a terrorist.

Researchers at the Centre for Advanced Strategic Analysis (CASA) have said while US and UK assistance is welcome in Ghana (and other states along the gulf of guinea), there is increasing danger that the next stage of the war on terrorism would be fought within the gulf region.

“The friends and suppliers of oil to the US could increasingly come under attack as a means of punishing the US or its allies. If it is established that the source of oil comes from this region, it is likely the region would see more attacks offshore,” they stated.

Other analysts also have said a recent video coming from Boko Haram, the Nigerian terrorist group, in which they have held a French national hostage, suggests the terrorist organisation “is metamorphosing from being a local group with a mainly Nigerian agenda into a more international jihadist outfit”.

The Deputy Minister said the Act is aimed at providing the security agencies with the “adequate wherewithal” to designate groups and individuals as terrorists so they can be dealt with accordingly.
