Bimbilla MP calls for compensation package

The Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, Dominic Nitiwil, has called for adequate compensation package to be awarded to families of persons in the security services who unexpectedly die in the course of serving the country.

According to the MP, jobs carried out by such persons are very dangerous and it is important that such a fund is established to cater for their families in case of any eventualities.

His comment follows the case in which a Fire Woman crashed to the gound after she fell from the fifth floor of the Cedi House Tower in Accra last week, during a simulation exercise to determine the country’s preparedness to quell fire on high-rise buildings.

Deputy Group Officer (DGO) Hannah Yawson died around 5 a.m. on Friday at the Intensive Care Unit of the 37 Military Hospital where she was rushed to, immediately after the accident.

She took part in the simulation exercise which involved the application of the Knot Chair technique, whereby an unconscious person trapped in a fire situation on high rise-building is put in a chair to which a rope is tied and then lowered through a window to safety, but unfortunately the rope tied to the chair in which she sat snapped, leading to her fall.

Speaking on Metro Tv’s Good Morning Ghana programme on Monday, Hon. Dominic Nitiwul, who described the accident as very unfortunate, questioned why such old equipments are used during simulation exercises that can easily cause the death of fire officers.

He added that this is ample evidence of the lack of support from successive government to supply adequate state of-the -art equipments to the Fire Service to ensure effective performance of its duties.

Hon. Dominic Nitiwul, urged the Ministry of Interior to immediately take steps to resource the Ghana National Fire Service which plays vital roles in ensuring the safety of the citizenry.

Okaikoi North MP donates ambulance to Hospital

The Member of Parliament for Okaikoi North, Elizabeth Sackey, has presented an ambulance and medical equipment worth 25,000 Ghana Cedis to the Achimota Hospital.

The Hospital which was elevated to the district status two years ago needed another ambulance in addition to the only one that existed to deal with the ever increasing number of patients who attend the hospital, as it serves the entire constituency and other communities beyond such as Pokuase.

The Achimota Hospital for some time now has had to rely on the accident center in Airport for ambulances services to deal with emergency cases, a situation which on some occasions resulted in fatalities.

Speaking to ghanamps.gov.gh after the presentation, the Member of Parliament for Okaikoi North, Elizabeth Sackey disclosed that she was moved to present an ambulance to the hospital after she witnessed the plight of two pregnant women who were in labor and in critical condition at the hospital and had to be referred to another hospital in a taxi.

She said the donation is expected to reduce fatalities which otherwise may be recorded at the hospital due to the absence of an ambulance.

Hon. Elizabeth Sackey, has also lighten up the hospital by installing a lot of street lights to improve upon the security situation in the area.

She added that she is committed to helping in the construction of the maternity block which is currently on going to serve people in and around the Okaikoi constituency.

Okere MP calls for resigned Public Servants NGO

The Member of Parliament for Okere, Dan Kweku Botwe, has suggested the setting up of a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) to financially cater for public officers who resign their position on the basis of principle and conviction.

According to the MP, the absence of such an outfit makes it difficult for public officials who are compelled by their political superiors to do things against their principle resign honorably, because they will not have any means of livelihood after they leave office.

Speaking on Peace fm’s morning show yesterday, Hon. Dan Botwe stressed the need for public servants to be encouraged to resign their positions when they realize certain decisions ‘’forced down their throats’’ violates their principles.

‘’ It is important that we have in this country, public servants who can boldly say no to their political heads and resign their positions and not fear the consequences’’, he said.

Dan Botwe believes such a daring act will help in the promotion of good governance in the country.

Akim Oda MP worried about Birim River bridge

The Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Hon. Yaw Owusu Boateng, has expressed his disquiet about the delay in carrying out rehabilitation works on the bridge over the Birim River, in the Birim Central Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The bridge which is currently in a precarious state needs urgent rehabilitation works as it is an important asset to the people of Birim Central and it leads to major towns in the municipality such as Oda, Ayeribi, Ofoase, Nkwanta.

Construction of a new bridge over the Birim River has been earmarked for this year and forms part of the seven bridges to be constructed this year contained in the 2010 budget.

Speaking to Ghanamps.gov.gh, the Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Yaw Owusu Boateng, stated that instead of the bridge being replaced or major works being carried immediately, speed ramps have rather been constructed on the road to slow down cars with the intention of reducing the level of resonance on the bridge, a move that has not improved the unsafe nature of the bridge.

He also noticed that the two huge pillars that have been erected before and after the bridge as a measure to prevent big cars from using the bridge and further weakening it has not worked, as the pillars have been dented because big cars continue to squeeze and use the bridge.

Hon. Yaw Owusu Boateng added that he is in discussion with the Minister of Roads and Highways Joe Gidisu to see how soon the Ministry can commence work on the bridge.

Tamale Central MP rubbishes calls for IGP to resign

The Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has described as unnecessary and unsupported calls for the Inspector General of Police, (IGP) Paul Tawiah Quaye to resign his position.

The IGP has come under pressure in the past week from some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the pressure group Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) to resign after he failed to maintain law and order and to protect citizens of Atiwa during the recently held by-elections.

The Pressure group also cited recent comments on the Judiciary by the NDC Chairman Dr Kwabena Adjei as subversive, serious enough that called for his invitation and subsequent investigation by the police, but all of which passed without action.

However, speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme, Hon. Inusah Fuseini, disagreed with their assertion and described the IGP as the best thing that happened to the Ghana Police Service, as he is very professional and efficient in his work.

According to him there is a significant change in the operations of the Ghana police under Paul Tawiah Quaye and must be given the free hand to operate.

On the violence that happened during the by – elections, Hon Inusah Fusei noted that under the circumstances the Police did their possible best in ensuring the success of the Atiwa by-elections, as they deployed enough personnel to police the by-election.

“The job of the police was to facilitate the smooth running of the by –elections by ensuring a congenial atmosphere in the constituency for a successful conduct of the election, which was realized’’ he said.

Muslim Caucus in Parliament launches Zakat and Sadaqa Fund

The Muslim Caucus in Parliament on Monday launched the Zakat and Sadaqa Trust Fund to fight poverty, disease and deprivation among Muslim and non-Muslims in the country.

The Fund would offer scholarships to students in financial crisis in order to eradicate ignorance and, thereby, eradicate poverty. Zakat is the fifth pillar of Islam and an obligatory annual charity of all income that accrue to Muslims.

It is a compulsory charge on all Muslims whose incomes reach a certain threshold. However, those not within the approved threshold could donate to Zakat if they have the conviction to do so. Sadaqa, on the other hand, is the daily optional alms that Muslims give to the needy in society.

Contributors to the Fund are mainly MPs but it is extended to all Muslims working in parliament who so far have showed much willingness to pay.

Alhaji Collins Dauda, Minister of Land, Forestry and Natural Resources, who spoke on behalf of the Vice President, commended the initiators of the Fund for their initiative. He said no one would be able to stand the turbulence of the 21st century without education and pledged the support of government to such a noble step that aimed at combating poverty.

Dr Mustapha Ahmed, Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing who chaired the event, said the common enemy to all Muslim was not other religions or somebody somewhere but poverty, ignorance, disease and deprivation.

He noted that where there was ignorance, there was poverty too, adding that poverty eradication should be the business of all. Mr Rashid Pelpuo, Deputy Majority Leader who stood for the Speaker of Parliament, Mrs Joyce Bamford-Addo, said if all Muslims in Ghana could contribute at least GH¢1.00 a month, it could grow into a mighty fund that could benefit a lot of people.

The Speaker wished all Muslims a happy Eid-Ul-Fitir in advance. Present at the function were the National Chief Imam, Sheik Osmanu Nuhu Sharabutu, Mauvi Wahab Adam, leader of Ammahdidiyya Muslim Missions in Ghana, Islamic Scholars and MPs.

Nii Lante Vanderpuye embarrasses me – Former Tutor

The Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South constituency, Stephen Balado Manu, says he is increasingly becoming embarrassed about the conduct of Nii Lante Vandepuye, a special aide to President John Evans Attah Mills.

Nii Lante Vandepuye has received a lot of bashing in the media over the past few weeks after he wrongly pre-empted President Mills’ opinion on NDC Chairman statement, by insisting the president was in full support of Dr. Adjei’s comments, that the NDC government will intervene and “clean the judiciary”, if the Chief Justice failed to fight the growing rot within the judiciary, and also for the role he played in stopping the Nana Akufo Addo from exchanging pleasantries with chiefs during this year’s Fetu Afahye.

Speaking on Net 2 television in Accra, Hon Stephen Balado, Manu stated that as a former teacher of Nii Lante Vanderpuye in Presbyterian Boys Secondary School (PRESEC)in Accra, he became very happy and proud at his appointment as a presidential aide, with the believe that he was going to perform his duties creditably but that has not been the case.

‘’My confidence in Nii Lante Vanderpuye is beginning to wane, in recent times he has been in the media only for the wrong reasons’’, he said.
‘’Issues about him is becoming one too may and it is important he takes steps to correct the bad impression that people are beginning to have about him’’ he further stated.

Hon Stephen Balado, stressed the need for Nii Lante Vanderpuye to ensure that his conduct does not bring the high office of the president where he works into disrepute.

Bantama MP condemns Deputy Coordinator of National Youth Council

The Member of Parliament for Bantama constituency, Cecilia Dapaah, has condemned the Deputy Coordinator of the National Youth Council Prince Derrick Adjei, for the unsavory remarks he made about Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his supporters who attended this year’s Oguaa Fetu Afahye in Cape Coast.

Prince Derrick Adjei had stated that Nana Akufo Addo may not have been acknowledged during the Oguaa Afahye festival by President J.E.A. Mills because he was drowned in the crowd owing to his height and stature.

He further claimed that some supporters who accompanied Nana Addo to the event were smelling of alcohol and so were stopped from going to certain places they were not supposed to go.

But speaking on Oman fm’s morning show, Hon. Cecilia Dapaah, described Prince Derrick Adjei’s comment as unpalatable, one that should not be made by someone who heads an important institution such as the National Youth Council.

She noted that the comments are unfortunate and in bad taste particularly when Mr Ajdei was not himself present at the festival to verify if the supporters who followed Nana Addo were indeed drunk as he claimed.

‘’Nana Addo as a desciplined and responsible person will not allow persons who are drunk to come near him, let alone accompany him to an important programme such as the Oguaa Fetu Afahye’’, she said.

Cecilia Dapaah added that Prince Derrick Adjei will make himself a lot of good if he desists from making such unsubstantiated comments about high ranking personalities, since as a youth leader other young people may see him as a role model and may want to learn from him.

Minority wants ‘fraudulent’ STX deal terminated

The Minority New Patriotic Party in Parliament has again punched further holes into the controversial STX Housing deal, asking President John Mills to terminate the multi-billion-dollar housing agreement approved by Ghana’s Parliament on August 3, in the interest of Ghanaians.

At a News Conference on Monday September 6, the Minority described the deal as “fraudulent” and a major threat to the fragile national economy.

The Minority’s latest outburst about the deal comes at the time the Water Resources, Works and Housing Ministry has rolled out an elaborate plan for the take-off of the housing project, which involves the construction of 30 thousand housing units for the country’s security services.

Addressing Journalists at the Headquarters of the NPP, Minority Leader, Hon Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, said President Mills must pull the plugs on the STX Housing project and instead consider a cheaper way of housing the nation’s security services.

“First, we propose to Government to immediately set itself to complete the five thousand Five Hundred affordable houses which are at various stages of completion. This can be done by locally borrowing a few million cedis. We have been told that the resources need to complete them is less than 50 million cedis. When completed, they could all be allocated to security agencies.”

“Secondly in the medium term, government may come to Parliament with a bill to establish a security service Housing Fund and pay the over 100n million dollars needed to service this 1.5 billion loan every year for twenty years into the Fund and use it to build the houses for our men and women in uniform not only in the barracks, but also houses anywhere that they choose for them to purchase at subsidized interest rates so that they do not retire into penury and homelessness as they themselves characterize their plight”.

“With these alternatives, we do not have to mortgage the country to Korea. We will use local contractors, local materials and employ 100% Ghanaians and our men and women in uniform will get their houses in the barracks and elsewhere after retirement and everybody will be happy and Ghana will have self-Ghana better”.

“These we propose and strongly suggest are better options. If for whatever reasons government is determined and unrelenting to borrow from the Koreans, then may we appeal to the President for the sake of our fragile economy to scale down this loan to a manageable size and combine with the options which we have proposed, the housing could be provided to our security personnel”.

Hon Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu accused the Mills administration of peddling widespread falsehood about the STX deal, warning the country will pay dearly, should the project commence based on the terms of the deal approved by Parliament on August 3, 2010.

“As we have indicated earlier, the Agreement relating to the Supplier’s Credit Facility came to Parliament by Executive approval, in other words, directly from the office of the President. In the face of these patented deficiencies, what conclusions are we to draw? Is it that the President himself an Associate Professor of Law did not read the agreement, or is it that his advisors on the project did not offer good counsel to him? Let the good people of Ghana pass their own judgment”.

“Mr. President, we must save this country from this hunchbacked humongous deal which is good for Korea but bad for Ghana” the statement said.
